you can hear me talking about Book 4 of the Aeneid with Alice Constable, a postgrad student, here. Should you wish to. I didn’t have time to do my whole queer reading of Book 4, sadly, but it’s all published in my essay in Origins of Deconstruction, if you have access to a library – that’s another of those stupidly expensive academic books. The short version is that Book 4 is a tragedy of the heterosexual disruption of the lesbian continuum. Yes, that’s right, Book 4, the ‘Dido and Aeneas’ book, actually centres on and is structured around a relationship between two women – sisters, in fact, but Rich’s concept of the ‘lesbian continuum’ includes women whose affective lives centre on other women rather than on men, whether or not there’s a sexual or romantic attachment to women. But no-one remembers Anna.

  1. Thoroughly enjoyed this: thanks for posting the link. I hope those podcasts stay up for when I finally make an attempt on the Aeneid
